a5c7b9f00b In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper. In an alternative Victorian Age Gotham City, Batman begins his war on crime while he investigates a new series of murders by Jack the Ripper. While I will say I'm not familiar with the source material, I did enjoy the movie a lot. I liked the setting, the references to the time period, the characters, the action, pretty much all of it. I also give them props for making Jim Gordon the villain, I was thinking it would just be Dent or some variation of Victor Zsasz or Joker, but they took a chance and I think it worked. The only part I had a problem with was the note that Bruce gives the guard in jail. It's obviously in code, but it's never shown being given to Alfred, so when Bruce magically shows up next to the three Robins, it feels kind of rushed. The rest of the movie's paced really well though, it doesn't feel compressed to under 80 minutes except for that one scene. It's notgood"Under the Red Hood", "Year One", "Son of Batman", or "The Dark Knight Returns", but it was still entertaining. A short and sweet movie that took some chances that I think worked for the better. When I first read a summary of the plot, I felt a little weirded out. Batman set in a Victorian Gotham??? But the heavy atmosphere and especially the music score was great, and when you're dealing with such disturbing namesJack The Ripper, it's definitely going to be.

It could easily be just a dark neo noir direct-to-video film, because aside from the character names and the fact that it's in Gotham nothing screams Batman.

The twists and turns through the film makes it a gripping murder mystery, though, so therefore I can't say that I disliked it. The final climactic battle was similar to the one against the Joker from "The Dark Knight Returns Pt 2", and since that's one of the greatest takedowns in my opinion, this one the highlights of the film.

If you can look past the odd setting I'll say it's an engaging murder mystery with some disturbing imagery to emphasize the gory nature of one of history's most insane madmen.
